Recent Reads: By Night in Chile

Reading early Bolaño is like french-kissing your babysitter: a thrilling tease of future knowledge, dangerously earned. (I’m aware this sets up a sexual intercourse / Savage Detectives dichotomy, which I’m perfectly fine with.)

Though not as conceptually brave as Nazi Literature in the Americas, this deathbed rant of a novella by a Chilean priest is full of the usual Bolaño daggers against South American politics and the hagiography of old-guard culture. By Night in Chile is to be inhaled and kept inside until just before you pass out.
